good question.
netbooks are designed to be ralatevly inexpensive but i would steer clear from them . reason being that if you buy a laptop you have a bigger screen and more power but less baattery life. on the other hand how many places can you find in your school/home that has no mains plug what soever?
laptops=bigger screen more powerfull, WILL do gaminga nd video editing.
netbooks=mostly for surfing the web fairly unreliable (dont expect a £180 netbook to last more than 3 years withouth slowing down to a crawl. )
whateever your choice i would go for the laptop.
go for at least 2gb of ram -highly reccomend 4gb (ddr2 or ddr3 -no real difference). you would need some dedictade graphics so at leaast 256mb dedicated (512mb is better). i would go for a dual core at least 1.6ghz or 2.0 or higher.
you have to make a decision whether spending significantly more on a top end machine will benefit you-at the end of the day you need it or school work and (hopefully) occasional gaming.
which brand then?
i would reccomend sony as they have very nice screens, good responsive keyboards and the power, however they could be costly.
dont go with compaq (unreliable , repairs very costly, rubbish screen as in brightness, and feels very cheap even if it isnt.)
dell is good but they will cahrge you extra for the fact that they will have to build a system to your exact specifications.
try hp.
whatever you do at least 2gb of ram is the bare minumim, you would be way happier with 4gb.
